Ian "FIELDER UK" Malcolm's Rare Eclectic Art & Toy Collection
Known as FIELDER UK on the Kidrobot Discussion Boards, collector Ian Malcolm has a very impressive art and toy collection. With one-of-a-kind and very low edition work from Ron English, Erick Scarecrow, Chris Ryniak, and Cris Rose - Ian has very edgy taste to be jealous of. As a big fan of Coarse, I am extremely impressed seeing Squink's "Pawborg" and Jon Paul Kaiser's "Pain & Fury" Custom PAW! figures in the photo above. Beyond the great shots, Ian provided us with info about his life and a unique look at what an art and toy collector thinks.
Could you tell us about yourself? What do you do and why do you collect art and toys? Ian Malcolm: "I live in Brighton which is on the south coast of England and I have a day job working in office administration. I live with my partner in a fairly small apartment . Space is quite limited so unfortunately I cannot display all of my collection. We live on the top floor and luckily have access to loft space which is packed full of toys and packaging. We are hoping to move somewhere bigger next year so I should be able to display many more toys and have them organized in a better way. I started collecting toys after initially having an interest in pop /urban art. The first toy I bought was Ron English's McSupersized figure and it continued from there. I have a love-hate relationship with collecting. I collect because it gives me a great amount of pleasure but I hate how much I spend on it! Living in the UK usually means extra shipping costs and customs duty to be paid. Unfortunately, it's incredibly addictive."
What's your most expensive piece? Hardest-to-find/buy? Ian Malcolm: "My most expensive piece of wall art was a giant 'American Depress' card made from perspex by D*Face. It's an edition of five. D*Face is probably my favorite artist and when I saw it at a show he did in London, I couldn't resist. Especially after all the free beer! It is one of my favorite pieces so I don't regret it. For toys it would be a four foot Ron English 'Grin' figure which I got direct from the manufacturers, Garageworks Industries, based in Hong Kong. It's an edition of ten and I was lucky to get it from them for a pretty good price. I remember when it arrived. It was in a huge box strapped on to a wooden pallette. This would also have to be my favorite toy."
Who are your favorite artists? Ian Malcolm: "I have lots. For wall art it would be D*Face, Ron English, Miss Bugs, Takashi Murakami, Bast, Judith Supine and Paul Insect. For toys it would again be Ron English, Erick Scarecrow, all the artists on the Circus Posterus roster, Lash (MVH), Paul Kaiju, Bob Conge, Brent Nolasco, Cris Rose, Lunabee... I could go on and on."
What do your friends and family think about your collection? Ian Malcolm: "They love it but my girlfriend thinks I've got far too much. I have to try and sneak new pieces in and hope she doesn't notice! I always get positive comments from friends and visitors. I think people are quite shocked when they see it for the first time."
Your collection is fairly eclectic - prints, toys, customs, and skateboard decks. Have you chosen this collecting style or has this come fluently? Ian Malcolm: "Basically I will add anything I like the look of. I love everything from, say, Itokin Park to Scott Radke. I think it's much more interesting to mix it up than just restrict what you collect. I think it would be quite boring to just collect dunnies or qees. My collection is evolving all the time. I have sold some pieces to fund new additions. In a few years time it might look quite different."
Thank you so much to Ian Malcolm for providing such great shots and insight!
